With fresh clear skies and crisp cool air, winter is a delightful time to be in Sydney.
We love the Upper North Shore, which has plenty of opportunities for winter activities. Here is a roundup of some indoor and outdoor activities you can enjoy this season.
Days out on the Upper North Shore
Cumberland State Forest
Australia’s only metropolitan state forest spans 40 hectares of bushland. Enjoy a picnic or barbecue, then take a forest walk and discover the surprising diversity of wildlife. For a real adventure, try the high ropes course. Find out more about visiting the Cumberland State Forest here.
See some koalas
We love the Koala Sanctuary because it is unique to the Upper North Shore. Arrive at this lovely wildlife park early to see the farmyard animal/reptile presentation or find out more about Australia’s cuddliest native animals at one of four koala presentations during the day. You can also enjoy a picnic lunch by booking one of the barbecue spots.
Join some local bushwalks
Happening on June 28, the Top of the Gorge guided bushwalk is recommended for adults and teens who have a basic to average level of fitness and bushwalking experience. Discover an area that only locals know about; rich in wildflowers and birds, with some great views across Berowra Valley.
The Blue Gum Walk in Hornsby allows you to experience the dramatic changes in vegetation as the tall blue gums growing on the rich, volcanic soils of the Hornsby diatreme give way to the woodland on the iconic sandstone ridge tops. A haven for many species of wildlife, discover for yourself this stunning area right on Hornsby's back doorstep. This is a moderately challenging walk, scheduled for July 4.
Young hikers will unveil the hidden mysteries within our local bushland on the Kids Rock! Bushwalk in Cherrybrook. Features such as London station, refuge rock and a local tree library will be uncovered by those brave enough to explore. This walk is suitable for children ages 8 and over, and will be held on July 11.
Ride the trails at Westleigh
Unofficial mountain biking trails can be discovered at Westleigh, with some beginner ‘green’ trails for the inexperienced and ‘black’ runs for serious mtb enthusiasts. While you need serious skills to ride the more advanced trails, the easier sections are flowing and fun to ride with older kids who are getting the hang of this sport. Check the Facebook page before you go as the tracks are closed in wet weather.
See a show
The musical hit Oh What a Night is on at Hornsby RSL Club this July. This show is a blockbuster musical revue conceived and directed by award-winning Broadway producer/director Michael Chapman, written by Motown producer George Solomon, with choreography by Paul Holmquist.
'Sherry,' 'Big Girls Don't Cry,' 'Walk Like A Man,' 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You,' 'My Eyes Adored You,' 'Working My Way Back To You,' 'Let's Hang On' and 'Who Loves You' are just some of the many hits you'll enjoy from the dynamic songbook of those boys from Jersey, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons.
During the school holidays, the kids can look forward to Jonas Jost’s ULTIMATE Magic Show. Jonas is one of the leading classical magic masters with a clean, tasteful and beautiful yet hilarious style.
Visit the Hornsby RSL website for more details.
Enjoy a meal out
La Carretta is a traditional Italian neighbourhood restaurant, with a range of pizzas, pastas, mains and desserts. Having relocated from Cherrybrook to West Pennant Hills, it remains a trusted and cosy winter venue for all occasions.
West Pennant Hills Sports Club is another option for eating out this winter: check the website for weekly specials or mark your diary for relaxed meals out, including Mexican Monday, steak nights on Tuesdays and a classic Sunday roast.
