Winter weekend getaways around the Upper North Shore

We’re now at the middle point of winter and you might be looking for a lovely way to spend your weekend. Whether it’s relaxing by a roaring fire, exploring scenic trails or indulging in gourmet delights, the Upper North Shore provides the perfect launchpad for a memorable mini-break.

Here are some ideas and activities to suit a range of interests:

Fine dining

Two options are Cottage Point Inn and Berowra Waters Inn. Both these restaurants have hundreds of five star reviews and are known for delivering a premium dining experience. However, you will definitely need to plan your weekend around getting to and from these locations.

Accessible only by boat or seaplane, Berowra Waters Inn provides a sense of seclusion and exclusivity, making every meal feel like a special occasion. The menu is crafted by renowned chefs and showcases modern Australian cuisine with a focus on seasonal and locally sourced ingredients.

Meanwhile, guests can arrive by boat, seaplane or car to Cottage Point Inn. With its rustic elegance, outstanding cuisine and panoramic water views, this restaurant offers an idyllic destination if you’re looking to have a tranquil and luxurious dining experience.

For seaside views with less of a trek, Jonahs at Palm Beach is on many people’s dining out bucket lists. Treat yourself to a fabulous weekend and stay overnight at the onsite accommodation.

Yoga and meditation

If it’s more a bit of peace and quiet you’re after, head for the Hawkesbury… just 45 minutes from Sydney in the serene setting of Maraylya, Billabong Retreat offers yoga, meditation, mindfulness and nutrition programs.

Guests of this award-winning retreat can indulge in delicious and nutritious wholefood meals, made to nourish both body and soul. The retreat’s programs are designed to reduce stress and increase happiness, making it an ideal escape from your busy year. Recognised for its excellence, Billabong Retreat has won the Best Health & Wellness Retreat and Most Unique Accommodation at the NSW Tourism Awards.

Glamping and island getaways

If you want to get away from it all without travelling too far, you have a couple of options.

First, check out Scotland Island Lodge or another Airbnb property on this small island on Pittwater. The island is only accessible by boat or ferry and you’ll feel a world away from Sydney, surrounded by spotted gums, kookaburras and cockatoos. There are two restaurants at nearby Church Point where you can book a meal, then jump in the water taxi to head back to your accommodation. If you prefer to stay on the mainland, The Pasadena offers boutique hotel rooms.

There’s also the Hawkesbury and Central Coast, where there is a range of accommodation options. One to check out is glamping in the Glenworth Valley… no need to pack a tent or bedding, just enjoy the fresh air and wide open spaces of this beautiful destination. You can book a horse riding adventure as part of your weekend getaway.

Family friendly ideas

A couple of family-friendly options that won’t have you driving for hours are Pearl Beach near Gosford and Umina.

Pearl Beach is a ‘bijou’ community with a beautiful stretch of sand and children’s playground. Walk to the beach from your accommodation and enjoy exploring the nearby rocks with your children.

Meanwhile, the Ocean Beach Holiday Resort at Umina won’t disappoint. Book a cabin or campsite and kids can wear themselves out on the jumping pillow and playgrounds. This spot is pet-friendly and only around an hour from the Upper North Shore.

Taking a winter break, even a weekend, is a great way to recharge for the rest of the year. Now the school holidays are over you should find that it’s not too difficult to secure a booking. Let us know if we have missed anything close to the Upper North Shore that you recommend.
