Let’s move to Westleigh

Tucked away in Sydney’s Northern Districts, Westleigh is one of the area’s best-kept secrets. This quiet, leafy suburb offers a fantastic mix of tranquil family living with the convenience of being close to everything you need. Read on to find out what makes Westleigh such an appealing location.

Westleigh's history

Westleigh, like many of Sydney’s northern suburbs, was home to the Dharug people prior to European settlement. The area’s suburban development took off in the mid-twentieth century, with many families building homes here in the post-war housing boom. Westleigh was once part of the larger Thornleigh area before being formally designated as its own suburb, with the name Westleigh coming from a combination of “west" and "leigh," an Old English term for meadow or field.

Located approximately 28 kilometres north-west of Sydney's CBD and approximately 16 kilometres from Chatswood, Westleigh is within commuting distance to the CBD, around 35 minutes by car. Getting to quieter beaches along the central coast is also straightforward for weekends, and Thornleigh train station provides a regular service into the city, along with a range of local bus services.

What’s it like to live here?

Ask the locals and they will tell you there’s more to this suburb than meets the eye. It has a great community feel, further strengthened by community activities such as Halloween and local sporting and school events. Traffic is mostly local due to the many cul-de-sacs, making it safe for kids to head to the park or shops independently. The leafy streets and surrounding parkland mean lots of birdlife and beautiful, elevated views, and there’s plenty to do on weekends both locally and in surrounding suburbs.

School options

The area is served by excellent local schools, including the highly regarded Thornleigh West Primary School, Pennant Hills High School, Loreto Normanhurst, Normanhurst Boys High, Wahroonga Adventist School, St Leo's Catholic College, Hornsby Girls High, Abbotsleigh, and Knox Grammar.

Shopping and other amenities

It’s no wonder that once people move here they tend to stay. Along with ample green spaces, a quiet atmosphere and a welcoming community vibe, there are local shops and services, restaurants and green spaces, meaning once you’re home, you don’t have to travel far to pick up dinner or catch up with friends.

Along with Headen Park, Ruddock Park and Westleigh Dog Park, there’s also a mountain bike track, a tennis club and Berowra Valley Regional Park, which curves around the suburb, providing wildlife, beautiful trees, hikes and hours of outdoor recreation just a walk away.

It’s a short drive to Westfield Hornsby, and there’s a charming village shopping centre, with cafes, restaurants, a bakery, butcher, a pharmacy, barbershop, hairdresser, nail salon, dog groomers, medical clinic, dentist and chiropractor, F45 gym and travel agency along with supermarkets, including Aldi and IGA.

What about real estate?

Westleigh has a mix of housing, including many of the original mid-century homes on generous blocks. These tend to be solidly built, suited to renovation and extension.

There are also some wonderful homes from the 1970s and 1980s, designed to make the most of the area’s leafy, elevated views and big gardens, which are also popular with buyers drawn to the architecture of that era.

According to realestate.com.au, the median property price for a house in Westleigh is currently $1,980,000, an increase of 6.2% over the last year. On average, houses spend 51 days on the market here. There is a smaller pool of buyers at this price point, but they are out there and will always be interested in beautifully presented homes.
