The cooler weather is a great time to get your kids moving or trying something new. And happily Thornleigh, Pennant Hills, Normanhurst and Westleigh offer a wide choice of sporting activities and other options for kids. It’s no wonder this part of Sydney is popular with families. Here are a few of my picks – and please let me know of any kids’ activities you recommend.
Action Dance Academy
This wonderful dance academy is a much-loved part of the local community, and has been running for 25 years. My daughters went here and loved it. Ranging from pre-school to senior level, so this school takes keen dancers all the way through. You can choose from jazz, ballet, contemporary and more, plus adult yoga and pilates.
Hornsby Ku-Ring-Gai Basketball Association
This association offers an Aussie Hoops programme on Saturdays for ages four to seven years old. They also run school holiday basketball camps at the Brickpit in Thornleigh. Once you have the skills, the association will point you to a team or help you set one up so you start playing competitively.

Gaia Yoga
As well as active sports, many kids will benefit from more relaxing activities such as yoga, especially if they have a demanding school day. Gaia Yoga in Pennant Hills is run by teacher Astrid Pickup. She has trained in teaching yoga to teenagers, so her classes will suit teens wanting to try this relaxing and strengthening activity.
Thornleigh Thunder Football Club
This club was founded in 1954 and now has 50 teams of both sexes and all ages, including under-sixes. Catering for all levels and abilities, the club promotes competing over winning. Generous sponsors and dedicated volunteers make this club a great asset to the Northern Districts.
Eastwood Thornleigh District Tennis Association
Set in the middle of bushland, this tennis club is a beautiful spot for a weekend game. After-school and weekend tennis coaching is available for children between the ages of five and twelve – check the website for contact details and timetables. You’ll also find tournaments, competitions and holiday camps for children.
Northern Archers
One of the largest archery clubs in Sydney, this all-ages club in Pennant Hills Park offers ‘come and try’ sessions on Saturdays so your child can see if this sport is for him or her without a long-term commitment. The club also offers junior classes conducted by qualified Archery Australia instructors, plus regular competitive events.
Ready Steady Go Kids
Billed as ‘Multi Sports for 1.5 to six year olds’, this programme is perfect for kids who need to burn off some energy and try and range of things to see what they like best.
Also held at the Brickpit, the short non-competitive classes introduce five sports across a term, including soccer, tennis, basketball, hockey, golf, AFL, rugby, athletics, cricket and T-ball. Four different age groups mean your child will be playing alongside kids of a similar age and skill level for maximum enjoyment.
Northshore Swimming
This swimming school in Thornleigh offers baby classes for under 3 year olds, plus swimming and water safety classes for children from 3 years old. Once they get the hang of the basics, kids may want to join a competitive or development squad to further hone their skills.

Netball
Netball is another sport that kids, particularly girls, love, and here in the Northern Districts we have a number of clubs, including Thornleigh and West Pennant Hills. The Hills District Netball Association is located at the Netball Centre in Pennant Hills Park. It has an informative website where you can find out about local teams needing players.
