Twinkle Tour: Northern Districts Christmas Lights Hotspots
There’s something magical about Christmas in the Northern Districts. As December rolls in, our leafy streets transform into glowing trails of twinkling lights, inflatable Santas, and festive cheer that practically spills onto the footpaths. Families wander the neighbourhood with ice creams in hand, kids stay up past bedtime hoping to spot Santa, and locals put an impressive amount of time, energy and extension cords into creating Christmas displays that bring joy to the whole community.
If you’re ready to embrace the sparkle this year, here’s your cheerful, family-friendly guide to some of the Northern Districts’ most beloved Christmas light displays—covering Asquith, Hornsby Heights, Wahroonga, North Turramurra, Thornleigh and Pennant Hills. These stops deliver plenty of Christmas charm without needing to trek across Sydney (or fight anyone for a Westfield parking spot).
Asquith – 28 Lockwood Street
One of the area’s most iconic displays sits proudly in Asquith—and this one doesn’t just light up, it performs. Every year, thousands of lights are perfectly synchronised to Christmas music, turning the home into a mini concert that would make even the Grinch crack a smile.
Over previous years, the display has included a reindeer stable, glowing Lego characters, and a mega-tree illuminated by more than 4,000 lights. Each season brings something new, which keeps locals coming back year after year.
Visitors are encouraged to bring a gold coin donation, supporting the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, which focuses on child safety education. A feel-good display with a feel-good cause? That’s Christmas magic right there.
Hornsby Heights – Sydney Road & Surrounds
If you want a truly immersive festive experience, Hornsby Heights is your destination. Sydney Road is often called the heart of Christmas in the Northern Districts, with more than 50 houses traditionally taking part. The whole area transforms into a wonderland of colourful tunnels, twinkling rooftops and inflatable characters that bob happily in the summer breeze.
The surrounding streets also join in, making it easy to spend a whole evening wandering, pointing and saying things like, “Look! That Santa moves!” (or “Don’t touch that!” if you’ve brought a toddler).
18 Ryan Avenue
Featuring more than 25,000 dazzling lights and a flying Santa who soars above the roof with his sleigh and reindeer several times each evening, this display is always a standout. It’s a true crowd favourite and also raises funds for Cancer Research, adding even more heart to the holiday sparkle.
Wahroonga – 4 Barnando Close
For more than 20 years, this Wahroonga favourite has been delighting the community. The home features an impressive collection of inflatables, lights and festive scenes—including a 15-foot reindeer that is basically begging to star in family photos.
The display changes a little each year, but the charm and creativity remain constant. It’s a peaceful, joyful stop on your Christmas light trail.
North Turramurra – 17 Ellalong Road
North Turramurra brings the big energy with this large, immersive display that has been growing steadily for around five years. The setup takes roughly a month to build, and it shows.
Every part of the property participates—the house, the roof, the garden and the front yard are packed with shimmering lights and moving festive characters. It’s a brilliant stop for families doing a lovely slow drive through the suburbs.
Thornleigh
Thornleigh may be small, but it bursts with festive spirit thanks to a couple of bright local favourites.
51 Oakleigh Avenue
A reliably cheerful display featuring colourful lights, glowing decorations and a sweet nativity setup. It’s the perfect quick local stop for a pre-bedtime stroll with kids… or a chance for adults to feel nostalgic without needing to assemble anything from Bunnings.
Allamanda Way
A cluster of homes at the entrance of the street join together to create a warm, inviting festive display. Expect inflatables, cheerful lights and plenty of neighbourhood charm—ideal for families wanting a relaxed, crowd-free outing.
Pennant Hills
14 Vaughan Avenue
A beloved Christmas tradition, this home delivers one of Pennant Hills’ biggest and brightest displays. Think a walk-in style experience with moving characters, colourful projections, nativity scenes, roof decorations and thousands of lights all working together in joyful chaos. It takes weeks to assemble and delights local families every year. A must-visit stop on your Christmas lights adventure.
