We’re all aware of the cost of living crisis currently hitting Australians hard, with many curbing spending and thinking carefully about how to budget over Christmas. With this in mind, rather than offering another article on Christmas shopping, we’ve put together some places you can donate to this Christmas.
The Dish Christmas Hamper Appeal
Hornsby Shire Libraries are partnering with local charity The Dish to help feed vulnerable people in Hornsby this year, with both a Christmas dinner and a hamper to take home afterwards. You can drop off your festive, non-perishable goods to Hornsby, Berowra, Galston and Pennant Hills libraries until December 13. Chips, biscuits, chocolates, tinned fruit, Christmas pudding and mince pies are all welcome.
The Storehouse
The Storehouse is a local non-profit initiative of the Northridge Vine Church. It provides new clothes for children aged 0-12 years old in and around Thornleigh. You can either make a tax-deductible donation or get in touch with them to find out what clothes they need.
Proceeds from this year’s Thornleigh Community Carols on Sunday December 15 will be going to this great local organisation.
The Annual Vinnies Christmas Appeal
This appeal gives you the option of a one-off donation that will go towards Christmas hampers and food for families in need. IGA supermarkets have also partnered with St Vinnies this year with $2 Christmas baubles, with all funds going to the charity.
Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women’s Shelter
This much-needed volunteer-led local women’s shelter often puts out requests for specific items, from black-out curtains to a new printer on its Facebook page. Or you can make a donation directly to the shelter.
Lifeline Christmas Hamper Appeal
Lifeline Harbour to Hawkesbury Sydney helps those in crisis, keeping people safe and supporting individuals to lead engaged lives through phone counselling and other support services. This year, they are holding a Hamper Appeal to deliver food hampers to people who are struggling over Christmas. You can leave donations of non-perishable food at their head office in Gordon, or make a financial donation online.
One Meal Christmas Hampers
Northern Sydney local Nagi Maehashi, author of the popular Recipe Tin Eats cookbook, has partnered with Sydney organisation One Meal to provide hot, delicious food for people all over Sydney. One Meal will be putting together around 5,000 hampers this Christmas, and you can donate to their appeal here.
The Indigenous Literary Foundation Festive Appeal
This year, the ILF has partnered with First Nations artists and authors to produce beautiful illustrated cards to accompany a donation that will deliver books to remote communities. You can also buy books and tote bags that will make wonderful gifts.
Ku-ring-gai Financial Services
This local organisation has partnered with Hornsby Connect this year to provide boxes of essentials to those in need. Each box is filled with essential items valued at more than $80, which is sold to those in need for just $15 - buy one or a few and KFS will match your donation.
Donate some new toys
Good360 is another wonderful charity that helps connect brand-new goods, donated by top retailers and brands, with Australians in need. Through a network of more than 4,500 charities and schools, they make sure that essential items get to the people who need them most.
By donating to the Good360 Holiday Toy Drive, you’ll be bringing real joy and holiday essentials to children this Christmas. Every little bit makes a big difference.
If there’s time, gather up some donations before Christmas
Finally, if you have any good-quality toys, clothes and books cluttering up your home, why not donate them to your local charity shop before Christmas? While charity shops are often inundated with bags of post-Christmas merchandise, for many families, a good-quality toy or book from a charity shop is great for those doing their Christmas shopping on tighter budgets.
